New database trial: CAIRN: French-language E-Books from next Monday, 15 February 2016

French language E-Books available online. Trial period: 15 February 2016 - 14 April 2016.

TCD Library has arranged a two-month trial of Cairn’s E-Books.

Cairn, the French equivalent of Project Muse, is an online collection of publications in the French language, in the area of humanities and social sciences. Created in 2005 by four Belgian and French academic publishers, Cairn is now providing selected  resources from 130 publishing houses.

During the trial TCD has access to more than 2,200 research books (monographs, proceedings, other collective works) from French and Belgian publishers (Autrement, De Boeck, La Découverte, éres, éditions Mardaga, PUF, ENS, La Documentation française, Presses de Sciences Po and Quae).

The site has both French and English interfaces. It is available on and off campus during the trial.

This unique archive marries fact and fiction, allowing researchers to discover essential primary documents such as trial transcripts, case notes from renowned judges and documents from detective agencies. 

Content includes: trial transcripts; documents related to the development of forensic techniques; detective agency records; prisoner photographs; newspaper reports; true crime literature; police force records; prison postcards; penny dreadfuls, dime novels, detective fiction and mysteries; manuscript collections from well-known figures; crime-related broadsides and prints.

Open Book Publishers. Free, scholarly ebooks. Membership trial: 29/1/15-28/2/15

A trial membership for this collection of open access, free, scholarly ebooks is currently available until the end of February, via the Library’s Databases and Ebooks page, Trial Databases tab.

Open Book Publishers is a non-profit organisation established, by academics in Cambridge, to publish rigorously peer-reviewed Open Access monographs. To date, 51 titles in the humanities and social sciences by some of the world's best known scholars (including Amartya Sen and Noam Chomsky) have been published.

For an annual membership fee, member libraries can allow the full range of formatted digital editions (pdf, epub, mobi) to be freely downloaded by any registered library users.

The Library could also allow any digital edition of titles to be uploaded to the library's own digital repository or ebook collection, to keep permanently.

A 15% discount is granted to any registered member of the university library (staff/student/alumnus) on the sales of any printed edition of Open Book Publisher titles, purchased from its website.

The PsycTESTS database is produced by the American Psychological Association (APA). PsycTESTS is a research database that provides access to psychological tests, measures, scales, surveys, and other assessments as well as descriptive information about the test and its development and administration. This is a bibliographic database, which also contains full text and multimedia. (76% of test records contain the actual test or test items.) More details here.

• NAXOS Music Library Trial: September 2014 - 30 November 2014.
• Naxos Music Library [NML] is the world's largest online classical music library. Currently, it offers streaming access to more than 102,310 CDs with more than 1,485,200 tracks of both standard and rare repertoire. Over 800 new CDs are added to the library every month.
  The library offers the complete Naxos and Marco Polo catalogues plus the complete catalogues or selected titles from over 650 record labels, with more labels joining every month. Along with classical music, jazz, world, and pop/rock are also represented.

  The South Asia Archive is a fully searchable digital archive resource providing access to over 4 million pages of rare and valuable research and teaching materials (both primary and secondary) across the humanities and social sciences. Focused on South Asia, the Archive comprises material sourced from collectors and archivists in India by the South Asia Research Foundation.
  
  The South Asia Archive will give digital access to rare and out of print materials ranging from the mid-18th to mid-20th Century in a mix of English and vernacular languages.

The trial for three of four titles has ended. The trial of one title: Future Microbiology has been extended to July. It is available to TCD-affiliated users, on campus, during the trial period, to 31st July.

The original trial period for all four journal titles, Future Oncology and Lung Cancer Management and then, Future Microbiology and Immunotherapy was: 1 December 2013 - 31 March 2014.

SYNTHESIS is an information service for the research, development and educational communities in engineering and computer science. The basic component of the library is a 50- to 100-page electronic book [Lecture], that synthesizes an important research or development topic, authored by a prominent contributor to the field. SYNTHESIS is organized by series. It is a growing collection.

Drama Online - Trial access

Drama Online introduces new writers alongside the most iconic names in playwriting history, providing contextual and critical background through scholarly works and practical guides. This is a beta version of Drama Online, made available for trialling, to TCD, until May 29th - extended to September 2013.

The Paley Center Seminars [ProQuest] is an online video archive of the seminar series held by The Paley Center for Media (formerly The Museum of Television & Radio) in New York and Los Angeles. The seminars feature leading names in media discussing the creative process, contemporary issues in production, and issues such as the impact of the media on contemporary society. Topics covered range from presidential advertising campaigns to reality shows, from writing sitcoms to the role of the media in the Middle East. The archive will include more than 300 hours of video, with new content added each year in regular updates. [Paley Centre website]

John Johnson Collection - Trial access

An archive of printed ephemera from the Bodleian Library, Oxford and ProQuest. Topics include: everyday life in Britain in the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Categories include Nineteenth-Century Entertainment, the Booktrade, Popular Prints, Crimes, Murders and Executions, and Advertising. The collection was assembled by John de Monins Johnson (1882-1956), Printer to the University. The collection currently provides access to facsimile images of more than 36,000 items.

Dictionary of Irish Biography - Trial access

Dictionary of Irish Biography - Trial access available till December 31st 2009.

The Dictionary of Irish Biography is a collaborative project between Cambridge University Press and the Royal Irish Academy, involving 700 contributors and spanning 9,000 lives. The Dictionary includes the lives of Irish men and women who made a significant contribution in Ireland and abroad, as well as those born overseas who had noteworthy careers in Ireland.

A partnership between the Institute of Historical Research, the Royal Historical Society and Brepols Publishers (providers of Brepolis databases).

The Royal Historical Society (RHS) Bibliography of British and Irish History will be superseded on January 1st 2010 by the Bibliography of British and Irish History Online (BBIH).

The RHS Bibliography has been essential tool for researchers of British and Irish history. Following the cessation of funding at the end of 2009, the new BBIH will be published by Brepols Publishers and will change from a free access to a subscription service. Help for users familiar with the RHS Bibliography is available on the Brepols website.

Reaxys - Trial access

Reaxys Trial access till 30th November 2009

Reaxys is a web-based search and retrieval system for chemical compounds, bibliographic data and chemical reactions. It is built to support chemists in their daily work.

Reaxys starts with the query form, which allows you to enter reaction, substance or textual information.

Reaxys is based on the combined content of the Beilstein, Gmelin and Patent Chemistry databases. Access to the Beilstein (organic) and Gmelin (inorganic) is currently (2009) available via the Library at CrossFire, Beilstein and Gmelin.

In 2010, the CrossFire Service will be replaced by the new Reaxys interface.
