Irish interest - free access to archives of JMI

[Nov. 2008]

JMI: Journal of Music in Ireland has made its entire online archive available for free.

The resource, which can be accessed at http://www.thejmi.com/, comprises the complete back-catalogue of the magazine and contains hundreds of articles, interviews, reviews and listings.

The archive represents a unique record of Irish musical life since 2000. It is a valuable resource for musicians, composers, students, academics, journalists or anyone worldwide with a serious interest in Irish music.

Scarcely anything in the way of a riot …

The scrap of a sentence above comes from the Freeman's Journal […] and is part of a contemporary account of scenes at Donnybrook Fair in August 1838.

Trinity College Dublin was mentioned in the Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle (1807):
An algebraical proof of Sir Isaac Newton's Binomial Theorem, [...], has been lately discovered by Francis Burke, A. B. a student in the University of Dublin. The discovery has been honoured with a distinguished premium from the Board of Trinity College.

These reports were both found in a set of two new databases purchased by the Library: The British Library Newspaper Collection. The Collection consists of two databases of primary source material, the 19th Century British Library Newspapers and the 17th-18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers.

Rev. Charles Burney (1757-1817) gathered London and provincial British newsletters and newspapers. His collection also contains material from the Americas, Europe and India. When bound, this material ran to more than 700 volumes. These have now been digitised and made available by the British Library, along with the 19th Century British Library Newspapers. This second database contains material (over 2 million newspaper pages, national and regional) from the collections held in the British Library and the National Library of Scotland.

To find these collections in TCD Library, search the Main (not Periodicals) Library online catalogue for British Library Newspapers or for either of the two database titles, 1. Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Burney Collection, and 2. Nineteenth Century British Library Newspapers. These collections may also be accessed from the Databases section of the Library Website, Information Resources: Databases.

Irish Times Digital Archive: off campus access

There is a difference in how the Irish Times Digital Archive may be accessed off campus to the way most databases are reached. The instructions on how to do this are on the Library Website, Information Resources, Off-campus access page, see the relevant FAQ. You will need to input your username and password to see these instructions.

Another database which requires special instructions is Westlaw UK. These instructions are also to be found on the Off-campus access page.

The reason for this is that the databases mentioned are not compatible with EZproxy. EZproxy is not a server but a proxy-like system. It alters the URL and these databases cannot support this system.

EZproxy and access off campus: help page

Off campus access to TCD Library resources.

There is a list of frequently asked questions and their answers here.

These cover issues such as:
going via Google searches to accessing Library-subscribed full-text journals;
saving links in Favorites or Bookmarks to use off campus;
restoring links to Favorites or Bookmarks which haven't worked since the changeover to EZproxy.

EZproxy and Library Staff page

Message from Mark Brennan about accessing local staff pages:

We’ve had some queries from staff regarding access to the LStaff pages from home since the EZProxy system was introduced : click on this new link when Off-Campus:

http://www.tcd.ie/Library/LocalStaff/

Then use current username and network password, as with other EZProxy controlled pages.

If you want to bookmark this link (or put it in your Favorites) you must save the link BEFORE clicking on it.*

*Saving a link to Favorites or Bookmarks before opening link:

Internet Explorer
-----------------
Right-hand click on the link and select "Add to Favorites". Opposite the label:
"Create in", select "Favorites" or one of your own folders from the drop down menu. Click "Add".

Firefox
-------
Right-hand click on the link and select "Bookmark this Link ". Opposite the label:
"Folder", select "Unsorted Bookmarks" or one of your own folders from the drop down menu. Click "Done".

EZproxy and off campus access

Off campus access to the Irish Times Digital Archive is temporarily unavailable as the Irish Times system doesn't support EZproxy. We will have a work-around soon.
Newly purchased resources will be added to EZproxy as they arrive. Irish Newspaper Archive is to be added soon.
There is a list of FAQs on the Library website which deals with issues arising from the installation of the EZproxy middleware.
For example, details on how to access Westlaw UK are to be found here.
If you receive a query which isn't covered here, can you forward it either to me or Arlene for resolution? Thank you.

New system of access to TCD eResources from off-campus locations

A new system for accessing TCD's eResources off campus has been launched. When College members are linking to an electronic resource from off campus they will be directed to a secure page to authenticate with their College username and network access password. See here for more details.

Most people won't need to change anything but if you had your home browser configured to use Proxy4, you will need to follow these instructions.

IReL website launched

The Irish Research eLibrary (IReL) website provides information on the content of the Irish Research eLibrary initiative, as well as background, history, membership and latest news.

The IReL link on the TCD Library home page takes you to the IReL website. A list of all resources included under the initiative can be browsed on the site.

While this site can facilitate links to publishers' websites, the normal access point for fulltext access to journals and databases continues to be via the TCD Library website.

Arlene Healy is the TCD representative on the IReL Steering Group.

To coincide with the launch of the website, Fiona McGoldrick will be providing an IReL roadshow event at each of the member institutions. The TCD roadshow will take place on September 4th. The event will include a presentation on the history of IReL, the funding structure, resource selection, organisation, IReL survey results and usage analysis reports.
