Monasticon Hibernicum - new, free, resource

Monasticon Hibernicum Project:
Early Christian Ecclesiastical Settlement in Ireland 5th to 12th Centuries.
by Ailbhe MacShamhráin with Nora White and Aidan Breen.
General director of the project Kim R. McCone, Scoil an Léinn Cheiltigh, Ollscoil Náisiúnta na hÉireann, Magh Nuadat.

Inspired by the monumental Monasticon Hibernicum of eighteenth-century antiquarian and clergyman Mervyn Archdall (available to TCD-affiliated users via ECCO), the project [by Ailbhe MacShamhráin with Nora White and Aidan Breen] is more than a revised version of Archdalls opus. While Archdalls encyclopedia of pre-Reformation monasteries and abbies covered some five-hundred and fifty sites in eight-hundred pages, this database of pre-twelfth century ecclesiastical settlement is much wider in scope, recording ten times the number of sites.

This database has been included on the TCD Databases and E-Books, New Resources page and will be included in the catalogue in due course.

Ireland's "Gothic Past": new TCD website

Recently launched: Gothic Past is an open-access resource for the study of medieval Irish architecture and sculpture.

The site showcases images from three significant collections of image archives, housed in the Department of History of Art and Architecture in College: the [Roger] Stalley Collection; the [Edwin C.] Rae Collection of medieval Irish architecture and sculpture: photographic images that were created and collected from the 1930s to the present day; and the [Danielle] O’Donovan collection of Irish Gothic moulding profiles.
These image collections have been a key primary resource for a thematic research project, Reconstructions of the Gothic Past, funded by IRCHSS and carried out in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at Trinity College from 2008 -2011.
The Reconstructions of the Gothic Past project has examined Gothic buildings in Ireland as part of a continuous historical process, analysing them not just as monuments of one particular period, but as historical ‘documents’. Examining change through time reveals how the use and treatment of Gothic buildings was affected by social, economic, religious and cultural change in subsequent ages. The project monograph will be published in 2012 by Wordwell Books.

Reconstructions of the Gothic Past Project team: Roger Stalley, Prinicipal Investigator, Rachel Moss, Associate Investigator, Caroline Martha McGee, Research Assistant, Niamh NicGhabhann, Doctoral Fellow, Olivia Horsfall Turner, Research Associate, Danielle O’Donovan, Research Associate,

Aistear.ie. New, free database

A new, free, database has been added to the New Databases page and will shortly appear in the catalogue and on the main Databases page.

Aistear.ie: oiliúint san aistriúchán agus sa Ghaeilge = translator and Irish language training database. This site [edited by Dr. Antain Mac Lochlainn, Ionad na dTeangacha, Ollscoil na hÉireann, Má Nuad] is for translators, editors and anyone writing in Irish. Material on the site includes practical exercises in translation and editing, important texts on written Irish, a collection of the most common mistakes, and notes on the more difficult points of grammar and syntax.

Ainm.ie: Free database

A new, free, database has been added to the New Databases page, the catalogue and the main Databases page.

Ainm.ie makes up the third of three websites being developed by Fiontar: i) the online dictionary, focal.ie, a National Terminology Database for Irish, developed by Fiontar, DCU in collaboration with An Coiste Téarmaíochta, Foras na Gaeilge; and ii) logainm.ie, the place-names database of Ireland. All three are free databases.

The content of Ainm.ie is based on that of the nine printed volumes of Beathaisnéis by Diarmuid Breathnach and Máire Ní Mhurchú. There are short biographies of over 1,600 people whose lives were connected to the cultural life of Ireland from 1560 to the present day. The main text of the database is in Irish.
